Have decided to look at the courses offered by the SRC and other local FE/HE colleges in NI. I was surprised to find only 7 in the country, so I chose Belfast Met and SERC in Lisburn because they had a comparable number of IT courses on offer. Most of the non-agricultural colleges in the country have satellite campuses in the South East (between Newry and Bangor) leaving most of the West and North West completely underserved.

I spent my day looking through the SERC’s website and making notes on those that were level 2 and over, the course delivery, length, cost, what qualifications were earned and where the course progressed. A lot of them were not offered in all satellite campuses, and none of them were offered online.

Had a frustrating day trying to navigate the Microsoft Learn platform. The Learn platform has information which can be partitioned in several ways – by product, by role and by certification. You can then use the drop-down boxes to the left of the screen to further filter the results. My first issue came with not really understanding the levels for Microsoft versus the NQF levels I used previously, many of the exams and certifications call for experience with the topic in question, so they were unsuitable. Each certification page shows which learning paths are required before taking the exam, and each path is made up of modules. Thursday Feb 17th

  Finished reading about Project Stratum, a huge investment project by the government to provide more homes with fast broadband speeds. The more I read, the smarter the E-learning platform is, and at the best time. It could get a lot of unemployed/housebound people back into the workforce.

Finished going through the Learn platform today. I was able to begin making some value assessment as I went through based on what I had previously read and what I was starting to understand. For example, a keyword search on the term “endpoint” with the filter “beginner” returns the module Reduce potential attack areas with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint , which is part of the learning path Secure your organization with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint . This is relevant to my report, in that over half of the businesses expressed the need for better education on security, and most showed a strong preference for Windows and Microsoft’s suite of programs. A quick check of the other modules in that learning path confirm that it is relevant, so I take notes, for example, it is beginner level, it concerns Microsoft 365 and Security Engineer role.
